Eric Wendt is expected to arrive in Tirana at the end of next week, while a diplomatic reception for the new US ambassador is scheduled for October 2. The guest list is also important for a political reason: will Sali Berisha be among the politicians who will enter the American Embassy upon his return to the US?
The new US Ambassador to Albania, Eric Wendt, is expected to arrive in Tirana at the end of next week, while the diplomatic reception for his introduction is scheduled for October 2.
The US Embassy in Tirana has begun distributing invitations for the event, which is expected to be Wendt's first broad public contact with representatives of Albanian politics, institutions, business, and public life.
But the guest list also has a political question mark: Sali Berisha.
There is no public information yet whether the Democratic Party chairman has been included in the waiting list for October 2. The issue takes on additional weight after Berisha's trip to the United States in September, where he participated as part of the International Democratic Union delegation in the Republican event in Texas.
For five years, Berisha's relationship with Washington was defined by the US State Department's 2021 decision to declare him ineligible for entry into the US. The September 2026 trip created a new factual situation. It now remains to be seen whether this situation will also be reflected in his relationship with the US Embassy in Tirana.
According to information on the organization of the reception, the guest list includes parliamentary group leaders, Assembly leaders and MPs who have previously had communications or activities with the American diplomatic mission. The guest list includes ministers, but also heads of justice institutions, including SPAK, GJKKO, the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court. The guest list also includes heads of independent constitutional institutions.
Precisely for this reason, Berisha's presence or absence on October 2 will be one of the political elements that will attract attention at the reception of the new ambassador.
Eric Wendt does not come from classical American diplomacy. President Donald Trump nominated him on April 13, 2026, for the position of US Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Albania.
Wendt, born on October 7, 1964 in Berkeley, California, has a long military career. He served in the US Army since 1986 and then in the Special Forces, known as the Green Berets.
His career includes missions and assignments in Indonesia, the Philippines, Iraq, and Afghanistan, as well as leadership positions in US special operations structures. He has also served as the principal military assistant to the US Secretary of Defense.
So, Washington has not chosen a career diplomat for Tirana, but a former military man with extensive experience in national security and special operations.
On October 2, the first political configuration around the new ambassador will be seen.
And one of the concrete details will be the list of Albanian politicians that the American Embassy has chosen to invite to Eric Wendt's reception.
