Lawyer Petraq Semani is arrested, accused of corruption

The Special Court ordered house arrest for lawyer Petraq Semani at the request of SPAK. Semani is accused by the prosecution of receiving 25,000 euros from relatives of a person sentenced to 15 years in prison for serious injury resulting in death, in order to influence the mitigation of his sentence.

In a press release, SPAK informs that Semani was investigated for the criminal offense of "Exercising illegal influence on persons exercising public functions".

"Prosecution investigations have found that Semani received 25,000 euros from relatives of the convicted person identified as Ll.D. The first installment of 9550 euros was delivered to Ll.D's house and the delivery of the money was filmed. The rest of the money, according to the prosecution, was given to the lawyer in installments.

The investigations of the prosecution have found that Semani failed to influence the court's decision. According to the prosecution, Ll.D was sentenced to 15 years in prison. After that, the convict's family seems to have asked for the money back. "From the amount obtained illegally, the citizen under investigation SP, has returned to the citizen SD, the amount of 8000 (eight thousand) Euros, while he has not returned the remaining part", it is stated in the announcement of SPAK.

However, the prosecutor's office charged Seman with corruption. "As above, based on the investigations carried out in the framework of this criminal proceeding, it results that there are reasonable suspicions based on evidence that the citizen of SP has consumed elements of the criminal offense "Exercising illegal influence on persons exercising public functions" , provided by article 245/1, second paragraph of the Criminal Code (before the changes with law no. 43/2021)" , the announcement states.
