Newsweek article echoes protests in Albania: Protesters angry with country's political establishment! Calls for Rama and Berisha to be removed

Opposition to Jared Kushner's planned luxury resort development in Albania has expanded into a broader anti-government movement, with tens of thousands of protesters taking to the streets in recent days to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama and denounce what critics describe as corruption and a lack of transparency around the project.
The demonstrations began as environmental protests against a proposed resort on the island of Sazan and nearby protected coastal areas, which is supported by US President Donald Trump's son-in-law. However, they have since evolved into some of the largest anti-government rallies Albania has seen in years.
Protesters have accused Rama's government of prioritizing wealthy foreign investors over public interests and environmental protection, while the prime minister has defended the development as a major economic opportunity for the Balkan nation.
“ This government no longer represents us ,” Ina Shkurti, whose family immigrated from Albania to the US when she was 11, told The Guardian. “It has chosen to represent oligarch investors like Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner. These protests will not stop, even if they are no longer exclusively about them.
Thousands of people gathered in the capital, Tirana, over the weekend as the movement — dubbed the “Flamingo Revolution” by supporters because of concerns about the threatened birds’ habitats — expanded beyond environmental activists to include students, civil society groups and members of the Albanian diaspora. Demonstrators have increasingly directed their anger at the country’s political establishment, with some calling for both Rama and opposition leader Sali Berisha to step down.
Rama has dismissed the protests as exaggerated "hysteria," arguing that international media have exaggerated the scale of the opposition and that critics are spreading misinformation about a project that is still under consideration.
Previous reports initially linked the project to Kushner's investment firm, Affinity Partners, but it is backed by Sazan Real Estate Development LLC, a separate company that includes Kushner and Ivanka Trump among its investors, a spokesperson told Newsweek.

Çfarë kërkojnë protestuesit në demonstratat e përditshme

Demonstratat kanë arritur një shkallë të rrallë që shihet në Shqipëri që nga rënia e komunizmit në fillim të viteve 1990, duke i bërë ato një nga shprehjet më të rëndësishme të zemërimit publik në vend në dekada.
Shkurti i tha The Guardian se çdo ditë, miqtë e tij shqiptarë që jetonin jashtë vendit udhëtonin nga SHBA-ja dhe pjesë të tjera të Evropës për t'u bashkuar me protestat.
Qeveria e Ramës, në një deklaratë për Fox News Digital, kritikoi "të gjitha palët dhe individët e huaj të interesuar, të cilët kanë përhapur të gjitha llojet e dezinformatave dhe kanë nisur të gjitha llojet e sulmeve të pabaza në të gjithë globin kundër një projekti shumë ambicioz me potencialin për t'u bërë një model tjetër për mënyrën se si mund të ndërtohen destinacionet turistike të gjeneratës së ardhshme".
Ai shtoi se Ishulli i Sazanit dhe gadishulli i Zvërnecit, ku do të ndërtoheshin zhvillimet luksoze turistike të propozuara nga Kushner, "është tokë në pronësi private".

Ata po ndërtojnë në tokë private, statusi i mbrojtjes së së cilës u revokua vite më parë nga Rama dhe oligarkët e tij.”

Sazan Real Estate Development LLC planifikon të zhvillojë projekte turistike luksoze në bregdetin Adriatik të Shqipërisë. Propozimet përfshijnë një vendpushim luksoz në ishullin e Sazanit, një ish-bazë ushtarake, dhe një zhvillim të veçantë pranë gadishullit të Zvërnecit, një zonë ekologjikisht e ndjeshme e njohur për habitatet bregdetare dhe jetën e egër.
Supporters, including Rama's government, say the projects could attract foreign investment, create jobs and boost tourism in one of Europe's fastest-growing tourist destinations. However, critics, including environmental groups, have raised concerns about sensitive coastal habitats, such as wetlands and bird migration routes around the Narta Lagoon near Zvërnec, which is known for its flamingo population.
They have also highlighted the potential negative effects of large-scale construction on the island of Sazan, one of the most undeveloped islands in the Adriatic, and have questioned the transparency of the approval process and changes in protected area designations.
On June 17, the European Parliament urged Albania to halt construction in protected areas. EU officials have warned that unresolved environmental concerns could complicate the country's bid to join the bloc, which Rama hopes to achieve by 2030.
“ The flamingo protest shows that citizens care about environmental protection and EU membership. We will stand by them, supporting their protest against Trump’s allies exploiting their natural heritage and supporting their journey towards the EU, ” said Tineke Strik, a shadow rapporteur for the European Commission’s 2025 report on Albania.
Rama rejected the call, saying on social media: “Flamingos will be protected, Vjose-Narta will be protected, Zvërneci will be developed based on an Environmental Impact Assessment according to European Union standards.”/ Translated by Alfapress.al from Newsweek
