The Competition Authority reacted today after the news a day earlier on Top Channel that while it fined six fruit and vegetable collection companies, it forgave the monopoly of Klodian Allajbeu, the largest agri-food market in the country.
According to the competition authority, the company EKMA Albania SHPK was not subject to this investigation because "it does not carry out collection activities of agricultural products, but operates in the rental market of premises for the storage and trade of agri-food products in Tirana."
To support this argument, the Authority also recalled that it has collected 100% of the fine imposed on this company 7 years ago.
However, numerous experts in the field, as well as socialist MP Erion Brace, have publicly stated that the company EKMA Albania SHPK is an important part of the fruit and vegetable market monopoly. This company directly influences the increase in prices through the fees it imposes on collectors regarding the rental of premises within the largest agro-food market in the country.
