The mother of the 2-year-old Albanian boy recounts the tragedy: The pit bull was scared by the hunters' shots and attacked my son

The mother of two-year-old Leo, who lost his life when he was attacked by a pit bull his family had adopted at their home on the island of Zakynthos in Greece, is in shock.
It all happened in less than 30 seconds, she claimed, attributing the attack to the terror the animal felt upon hearing gunshots and whistles from the hunters.
"Leo was every mother's dream, he was the sweetest child you could imagine," 32-year-old Robbie said in an interview with the Daily Mail.
"We used to say that even people who didn't like children adored Leo because he was so sweet. He was special and everyone loved him, his father, me, the whole family," she continues.
Robbie, who settled in Zakynthos while growing up in Andover, Hampshire, married to a young man of Albanian origin, speaks of a beautiful little boy who never stopped laughing and filled his family with happiness.
"He loved the animals we have here, and we have a lot of them: cats, horses, dogs," she adds.
"Everything happened within 30 seconds"
According to the mother, the pit bull had not caused any problems until Saturday.
"My husband had rescued the dog and it was tied up in the garden, with a ten-meter chain, near the forest where they were hunting at the time. You could hear gunshots, there were other dogs and the hunters were using whistles. I really think that scared the dog and made it attack," she says.
She even describes her son's relationship with Leo: " We've never had any problems with the dog since we got him. He would let Leo tickle his belly, pet him; lick his face. He never showed any aggression. Leo played with him all the time."
The woman then describes how it all happened within 30 seconds.
"Something just exploded inside him and within 30 seconds of us going in to fix the food, Leo came running out to see him. That's when it was all over. Leo either got caught or was shocked. It looks like he only bit him once."
"He wouldn't have made it"
Robbie and her husband then called emergency services. They put Leo in the car to go to the hospital and met the ambulance on the road.
"They took him out of my arms and rushed him to the hospital, but I don't think it was too late. He wasn't going to make it, and the doctors confirmed that when we got there."
She wants to see her child:
"It's been two days and I still haven't been able to see Leo, but I hope we'll be allowed to see him today." She says that if she had known there was any danger, she would never have let her child play with the pit bull, who was "fed, watered and never caused any problems."
A few days ago, Leo had celebrated his second birthday.
"When he was born, we were so happy. But I always had this fear in my stomach that I wouldn't have him for long. And now this has happened. He meant everything to us and now we will never see his smile or hear his laugh again," the mother said.
"We ran outside and Leo was on the floor"
Robbie denies that she and her husband will face criminal charges, as she says they explained that the dog was "tied up, fed and watered and had never caused any problems."
“When my husband found him, he was like a skeleton, but we took care of him and he got better. He had never shown any nervousness or aggression while we had him. We can’t believe it was all over in 30 seconds. The first thing we realized was when my daughter came in and said, ‘The pit bull bit him.’”
She then describes how she and her husband reacted.
"We ran outside and Leo was on the floor. The dog wasn't on top of him. Leo wasn't moving. It was just a bite. We never imagined this would happen."
Psychologists at the schools of the other two children in the family Leo's family has two other children in middle and elementary school.
Psychologists and social workers have been sent to both schools in order to provide psychosocial support to the school units to manage the incident.
The Ministry of Education announced that it will continue to closely monitor the situation and take all necessary measures to support children and their families.
In a relevant statement it issued, it expressed its "deep sorrow for the tragic loss of a 2-year-old child in the Agios Leontas area of Zakynthos and expresses its sincere condolences to the family."
The child's brother is a student at the primary school. In cooperation with the competent services, the Ministry of National Defense was immediately mobilized and a psychologist and a social worker from KEDASY are already at the school, in order to provide psychosocial support to the students and teachers.
The Ministry will continue to closely monitor the situation and take any necessary measures to support children and their families.
