Emigration is emptying Albania of educated youth/ 23% left during 2023-2024

Emigration has been and remains one of the most important social and economic phenomena that has accompanied Albania over the last three decades. Since the early 1990s until today, hundreds of thousands of Albanians have chosen to leave the country in search of a better life, greater opportunities for work, education and well-being.
This continuous flow of migration, which mainly includes young people and the active labor force, has significantly affected the demographic structure of the country, leading to population decline, aging, and the emptying of rural areas. Albanian emigration is not simply a demographic movement, but a reflection of the economic and social challenges facing the country, such as unemployment, low wages, and the lack of long-term prospects.
According to data and research conducted by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, it turns out that a significant portion of educated Albanians have left the country.
Specifically, the data shows that, in the group of educated people during the years 2023–2024, 23% of them left, while only 3% of those living abroad returned. These data show that the majority of educated young people are seeing their future outside the country's borders, considering emigration as the main solution for professional ambitions and for a higher standard of living.
This trend highlights not only the lack of competitive opportunities in the domestic labor market, but also the urgent need for reforms in education, economy and employment policies, so that Albania does not lose its most valuable capital: qualified human resources. Otherwise, continuing this trend risks further deepening social inequalities and slowing down the country's long-term development./ SCAN
