EU speeds up migrant deportations, new agreements signed for return

The European Union is preparing to implement a new law aimed at speeding up the deportation process of rejected asylum seekers and irregular migrants. Under the new regulation, called the “Return Regulation,” member states will have the right to sign bilateral agreements with non-EU countries to set up return centers, where people who do not have the right to stay in the EU will be sent.

Under the proposal, European countries could send migrants to countries unrelated to their origin, as long as there is a bilateral agreement and international human rights standards are respected. Return centres could function as transit sites, where migrants are prepared for repatriation, or as permanent destinations for those who are not accepted in any other country.

Danish Immigration Minister Rasmus Stoklund confirmed that “the criterion of connection to the country of origin has been removed,” giving member states more room to maneuver. “The centers can be transit or places where people are held for longer periods,” he stressed.

But the initiative has sparked a backlash from human rights groups. More than 100 international organizations, including Amnesty International, ActionAid, Caritas Europa and Human Rights Watch, have warned that such measures could lead to serious violations of migrants' rights, distancing the EU from the principles of international law.

According to the European Commission, currently only 20% of return orders are implemented in practice. With the new regulation, the EU aims to increase this percentage, through tougher legal sanctions for those who do not cooperate with the authorities, including the withdrawal of work permits and prison sentences./ Euronews
