Rama announced yesterday that the state will "stay on top" of oil contracts, "Bankers Petroleum Albania" appoints former Croatian diplomat as head of the company
Bankers Petroleum Albania has appointed Andrija Kojaković as Chairman of the Supervisory Board and Co-Chairman, who brings a distinguished career in energy sector leadership positions, diplomacy and strategic consulting.
This appointment came just one day after Prime Minister Edi Rama announced during a meeting with Tirana district deputies and directors of the capital's Municipality that together with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure they are working closely on a new oil supply system.
In his statement, the head of government emphasized that this project aims to include the state as a direct actor in organizing contracts and fuel supply, with the aim of strengthening control over prices and transparency throughout the oil circulation chain.
According to what the Prime Minister said, this new mechanism is expected to bring more efficiency and guarantees for consumers.
"We are working intensively with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure on a new oil supply system. It is a necessity and it is now an opportunity to move to oil supply with a new component of the state as a protagonist in the organization of contracts and oil supply, which we are very confident will bring much more efficient control, both over the price and over the entire oil circulation system and others," said Prime Minister Edi Rama.
Meanwhile, a day after this statement by the head of government, Bankers Petroleum Albania, through an official press release, announced the appointment of former Croatian diplomat Andrija Kojaković.
According to the company, Kojaković will have a central role in overseeing the company's engagement with Albanian authorities and in supporting a full clarification of the current situation in which "Bankers Petroleum Albania" faces Albanian justice.
Kojaković brings a distinguished experience in management positions in the oil and gas sector in the Balkans, including the period when he was the Executive Director of the Croatian company INA dd (1995–1997), where he led important financial and legal restructuring initiatives.
He has also served as Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia to several key countries (including China and the United Kingdom), as well as a Board Member at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), where he advised on economic development and governance. In the private sector, he founded and led the Central European Oil Company, supported by major international financial institutions.
“His appointment reinforces our commitment to strong management, transparency and accountable leadership as we move forward.
Meanwhile, our operations remain stable. We have reshaped our core team and our employees are being fully supported. Daily activities continue without major disruptions, thanks to the leadership of highly qualified and experienced engineers who are driving the company forward.
"Bankers Petroleum Albania remains fully cooperative with all relevant institutions and authorities. We are committed to constructive dialogue and full compliance throughout this process, while continuing to contribute to the security of the energy sector and the long-term development of Albania ," the company's announcement states, among other things.
We recall that at the beginning of July, the Fier Prosecutor's Office announced that it had launched an investigation into the company "Bankers Petroleum Albania".
The prosecution announced that 14 security measures were issued in connection with this operation, of which 9 security measures have been executed so far against current and former managers of the company, while 5 other citizens, mainly foreigners, have been declared wanted.
The prosecution announced that during the investigations, sufficient evidence was collected to identify the fraud scheme that the company in question has been carrying out over the last 20 years.
The announcement by this justice institution stated that the company "Bankers Petroleum Albania" has carried out exports and sales within the country from 2004 to 2024 in the amount of 532,433,614,112 lekë.
It also turned out that the company declared tax expenses in amounts that exceed revenues from exports and sales, resulting in losses in each fiscal year, with the total value for all periods amounting to 11,691,799,688 lek.
From the investigation, it is suspected that the damage caused to the state budget, through VAT benefits, is in the millions of euros.
