When you go to Shkodër, a sign written in black "Death Road" is the best personification of what happens on this road segment. The Lezhe-Milot highway is a nightmare for pedestrians and drivers, with a high number of accidents.

The north of Albania turns out to be the area where there are more accidents resulting in death not only in Albania, but also among the first in Europe, according to the latest Eurostat report. In 2021, 94 accidents resulting in death for 1 million inhabitants were recorded in the North, from 51 in the center and 73 in the south of the country.

Out of 400 regions in total that Eurostat reports, the north of Albania is ranked 25th for the greatest fatalities in relation to the population.

Compared to the European Union average of 45 deaths per 1 million inhabitants, fatal accidents are very high in all regions of Albania. Albania's average for 2021 was 70 fatalities per 1 million inhabitants.

With this level, the country ranks fifth in Europe after Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Latvia and Croatia. (there is no data for Kosovo and North Macedonia). The countries with the fewest accidents in Europe (with less than 20 fatalities per 1 million inhabitants) are Sweden, Malta and Norway (see chart).

According to Eurostat, in 2021, there were 197 fatalities from road accidents in Albania, of which 75 were in the north, 60 in the center and 62 in the south.

Europe, 45 deaths per 1 million inhabitants from road accidents

In 2021, there were 19,917 road accident victims on European Union roads, equivalent to 45 road deaths per one million inhabitants, according to Eurostat.

The EU region with the highest rate of road deaths was the far-flung French region of Guadeloupe, recording 159 road fatalities per 1 million inhabitants, followed by Severozapaden in northwestern Bulgaria (133) and Guyana, another region with the highest distant French (120).

In total, for 2021 there were 24 EU regions with at least 80 road deaths per 1 million inhabitants. These regions were located mainly in Romania (six regions), the more remote and island regions of France (four regions), Bulgaria and Greece (three regions each), Croatia, Poland and Portugal (two regions each), and the rest in Belgium and Italy (2020 data).

Some of the highest road death rates were recorded in rural regions, while urban regions and capital cities tended to report much lower road death rates.

Only two EU regions reported no road deaths: Valle d'Aosta/Vallée d'Aoste in northern Italy (2020 data) and the relatively small autonomous region of Ciudad de Ceuta in Spain.

The lowest rates of road deaths were observed in urban regions, such as the Belgian capital region (Région de Bruxelles-Capitale / Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest) with 7 road deaths per 1 million inhabitants, the Austrian capital region of Vienna (8 ) , the Swedish capital region of Stockholm (9) and the northern German region of Bremen (also 9)./MONITOR
