Scientists confirm: Albanians are descendants of Illyrians in the Balkans

At the symposium held today at the Academy of Sciences, Gjergj Bojaxhi presented a genetic study of the modern Albanian population,
Gjergj Bojaxhi stated, " It clearly shows that about 75% of Albanian male lines originate from the Paleo-Balkan population, the population of the Illyrian period, of the Bronze Age ."
According to the study, today's population originates from three groups of Illyrian tribes, who after the barbarian and Slavic invasions in the Balkans experienced a demographic explosion and repopulated the Albanian-speaking territories.
" There is a small nucleus in the southeastern area, in Berat-Skrapar-Korça. A second grouping is large in number, in the Dibër-Mat-Martanesh area. And the largest grouping that has survived is the area where Kosovo is today. Small populations have survived and with the restoration of the political system in the Balkans, a demographic renewal began. They were then dispersed to the Western Lowlands and then to the south, " Bojaxhi said, among other things.
Academic Ilia Mikrezi explains why there are similarities between the Albanian and Greek populations.
" It is due to the flow of migrations from the Anatolian area, mainly in the Bronze Age, towards the Balkans or southern Italy. There is also data on migrations coming from the north, but it is about much later, in the Middle Ages. We are talking about Slavic migrations or from the northernmost part of Europe ," explained Ilia Mikerezi, a researcher.
The study, which began three years ago, will continue with an analysis to see if genetic boundaries match dialectal ones.
