Xabi Alonso takes charge of Chelsea, official announcement expected

The London club and the Spanish coach have reached an agreement in principle, after finding common ground and making compromises regarding the transfer strategy in the upcoming transfer window.
Currently, several "structural details" remain to be formalized before the agreement is made public, but the will of both parties to successfully and quickly close this operation is quite strong.
Chelsea sacked manager Liam Rosenior in April, after just 106 days in charge as Enzo Maresca's replacement. Since then, Alonso has been the Blues' top choice for the role.
A career with strong fluctuations
The 44-year-old has an impressive CV as a coach. He performed wonders at Bayer Leverkusen, taking the team from the bottom of the table to a historic double (championship and cup) and an unbeaten Bundesliga campaign, as well as reaching the Europa League final in the 2023/24 season.
After another positive season in Germany, the Spaniard took charge of Real Madrid, an experience that did not go as planned, leaving the "Santiago Bernabeu" after less than eight months in office.
Chelsea play the FA Cup final against Manchester City on Saturday. Immediately after the end of that match, talks to finalise Alonso's contract are expected to accelerate and become official.
If all goes according to plan, Stamford Bridge will welcome one of the most sought-after and promising coaches in European football.
