Albanian becomes hero in Greece, dives into river and saves two drowning

An Albanian immigrant in Greece has become a hero after saving two teenagers from drowning after they entered the Arachthos River to bathe.

The two minor boys, aged 14 and 15, were pulled from the Arachthos River on Wednesday afternoon by Levian Goga, who didn't think twice about diving in to save them. They are now being treated intubated, as Levian, from the town of Dimal, tearfully described what happened.

"One is the same age as my daughter. They came and said help. I was drinking coffee, I heard 'help' and got in the car. They said 'help, two children are drowning' and I came. I went inside, pulled one out and then they told me there was another one. I went to find him, I dived in and I couldn't find him. Then I jumped out of the boat, it was very deep, five or six meters. I saw the child lying down, I grabbed him and I had to force him out so he could breathe,"  Leviani told local media outlet Arttv.

While expressing that  he "hopes the children will live,"  Leviani, a father himself, added that he did not hesitate for a moment to run to help.

"We all made an effort together. Nothing else. I only think about the children. And now my children are crying, I have to go home. For God's sake, the children are... I am a foreigner, I did well, I don't care what nationality they are. I hope the children live, we all made an effort together. May God help us, be with them to help them wake up and live their lives,"  he added.

For his part, the Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection, Varilis Giorgos, stated:  “We have four young people who were swimming in the river, two of whom encountered problems. Citizens rescued them before the Fire Department arrived and they were taken to the hospital in serious condition. The river is always dangerous and requires caution.”

The two boys were transported to the Patras University General Hospital. According to information, scans showed extensive cerebral edema and fluid in the lungs, while one of them also had a fractured neck.

According to reports, they were underwater for at least 20 minutes, and CPR was performed for at least 30 minutes. The lack of oxygen for all this time is an extremely aggravating factor for their health. However, doctors will continuously monitor their condition for the next 48 hours, which will be crucial for the prognosis of their health.
