"Shtepi bari", prostitution and begging/ Albanian boys and girls are"Human trafficking is a repeating story. We have not yet managed to break the chains to give freedom to these victims".

From "grass houses", to the distribution of narcotics, prostitution and begging... Albanian boys and girls are still used for sexual, criminal and economic purposes.

Sam Golbart, from the Embassy of the United Kingdom in Albania, said: "Trafficking in human beings appears in different forms. In women and girls, it takes the form of their trafficking for sexual exploitation. From the rest, to boys, mainly young ones, it appears in the form of drug trafficking and not only. Young people run away from Albania and end up in illegal activities there".

Seventy parents and guardians were criminally prosecuted last year on the charge of abandoning minor children. Data from the State Police show that compared to 2022, the phenomenon expanded by 11%.

Alma Tandili, Director of ASHMDF, emphasized: "We have had 2,500 children for the year 2023 alone. Including trafficked, exploited children and so on, we had 9 criminal proceedings last year. This is against parents or guardians who tried to take their children to EU countries".

But, the "road of dreams for a quick buck" is attracting more than the efforts of institutions to prevent human trafficking. Eljona Elmazi, Executive Director of World Vision Albania, declares: "Albania, both in terms of the legal framework and efforts to prevent human trafficking, has made a lot of efforts. But, on the other hand, the modern human trafficking has also developed in a cunning way".

To give voice to the need to increase efforts against human trafficking, World Vision Albania together with the British Embassy in Albania opened an exhibition with paintings and drawings of young people. More than 114 young people joined the initiative, three of whom were awarded prizes./A2 CNN
