Critical situation in Poliçan, Municipality: Flames are spreading quickly towards residential areas, elderly people in nursing homes and residents are being evacuated

Poliçan is facing a critical situation due to rapidly spreading flames. Through a post on social media, the Municipality of Poliçan announces that the flames have engulfed a significant area of the city and are spreading towards residential areas, endangering homes in the western part of the city of Poliçan.
So far, the elderly of the Center have been evacuated, who have been accommodated in the premises of the Poliçan Hospital and the "Refat Keli" school, as well as all residents living on the border of Kullusëm Street. According to the Municipality, the situation for extinguishing the fire is made even more difficult due to the darkness of the night.
"The darkness prevents us from intervening to completely avoid the danger, although we have surrounded the security perimeter with firefighting equipment along the segments near the flames. Despite the support of the Berat district authorities, we still need more as the flames, favored by the wind, are spreading very quickly towards the inhabited centers of the city. Together with the Prefect, we are following the fire extinguishing operation, with the main priority being people's lives, residential homes and citizens' property ," the post says.
Currently, the operational fire protection forces of the Berat District are engaged in extinguishing the fires, and are being assisted from the air by an Armed Forces helicopter.
The damage to these is considered considerable, while the Municipality emphasizes that it has been possible to protect strategic facilities, of particular importance, including: the Mechanical Plant, the Water Pump Station and the Multipurpose Center for the Elderly.
Since yesterday afternoon and until now, a significant area of the city of Poliçan has been engulfed in flames!
The fire started in the western part of the city, spreading massively to the eastern border of the Mechanical Plant, further to the end of the Prokuc neighborhood and to a significant part of the territory in the Plirëz neighborhood!
Under the care of the Mayor in cooperation with the Poliçan fire brigade, employees of the Services Directorate, volunteer forces, administrative staff of the municipality, and water supply employees, urgent measures were taken to protect strategic facilities, of particular importance including: the Mechanical Plant, the Water Pump Station, and the Multipurpose Center for the Elderly!
The elderly of the Center were evacuated and, under the care of the hospital personnel and staff, were accommodated in the premises of Poliçan Hospital and the "Refat Keli" school, where they are staying safe with increased care!
All residents living on the border of Kullusëm Street, not too far from the fire, were evacuated!
Currently, all operational fire protection forces of the Berat District are engaged, and at around 18:00 we were assisted from the air by an AF helicopter.
The damage so far is considerable, covering many hectares of agricultural land and olive groves, and one house, but fortunately there have been no human casualties!
The situation continues to be extremely critical, seriously endangering housing in the western part of the city of Poliçan.
