Elected mayor in Italy, the 31-year-old Albanian recounts the difficult journey

Sindi Manushi is a 31-year-old originally from Elbasan who has become the first Albanian to be elected to the post of mayor in a city in Italy.
Manushi won the local elections in the small town of Pieve di Cador. In an interview given to Euroneës Albania, the 31-year-old confessed the difficulties of her journey from emigration to triumph in the elections. She said that she immigrated to Italy with her family at the age of 9 and that the beginnings were very difficult. She underlined that she was educated in law and currently works as a lawyer. He added that he had a passion for politics, which he was able to materialize in this victory.
" This small electoral campaign of mine has taken me away and I have not been able to follow the elections in Albania. I try to be informed about what is happening in Albania, but this time I could not because of a special occasion because of my commitments.
I was unsure if I wanted to tell the media about this campaign of mine and I said it might not bring luck. I said it's better to win once and then tell the media.
I went to Italy when I was 9 years old, I did up to the 3rd grade in Albania. I studied here, I graduated in law and now I am a lawyer. The beginnings were very difficult. Like any immigrant, the beginnings were not easy. We were lucky to come to a small town where everyone knows each other.
In recent years, there has been a development in terms of Albanians, since at the beginning in the 90s we had a bad and undeserved reputation. But in recent years there has been development from this point of view.
I also experienced discrimination from a part of the population that is right-wing and follows the trends of the Italian xenophobic right," she said.
