Fire on Skërfica Mountain/ Danger to the protected Pikës forest, aerial intervention required

A fire was reported today on the Skërfica mountain, in the territory of the Municipality of Delvinë, with a risk of spreading towards the Municipality of Gjirokastër. The Fire Protection and Rescue Service (MZSH) of Gjirokastër immediately notified colleagues from the MZSH of Delvinë, who have sent a group of firefighters to intervene on the ground.
According to the latest data, the fire continues to be active and, depending on the wind direction, may grow larger, directly threatening the protected Pikës forest.
Due to the remoteness and rugged mountainous terrain, the Gjirokastra Fire Department was unable to intervene today with ground vehicles. Tomorrow, a group of 10 firefighters will be sent to the area to continue efforts to isolate the flames, while support from military forces will also be requested for ground intervention.
Considering the difficulty of the terrain and the high risk of fire spreading to protected forest areas, authorities consider an emergency air intervention necessary to avoid irreparable damage to the protected area.
