Alarm for Europe/ Experts: Areas burned by fires could increase by 39%

Forest fires are expected to affect 39% more territory in Europe by the end of this century, even in the most optimistic scenario for limiting global warming, according to a recent study.

Experts warn that extreme temperatures, drought and strong winds will create increasingly favorable conditions for the spread of fires. In the most pessimistic scenario, where global warming reaches 3.6°C above pre-industrial levels, the area burned in Europe could almost triple.

The study highlights that investments in fire management and prevention could reduce this increase by more than 70%, but will not be sufficient to eliminate the problem.

"Fire management cannot replace measures to curb climate change," said Maik Billing, a researcher at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and the study's lead author.

The warning comes at a particularly difficult season for Europe. Major fires have engulfed countries such as the UK, Belgium and Germany, while France, Spain, Italy, Croatia and Greece have previously faced powerful fires.

According to data from the European Forest Fire Information Service, more than 600,000 hectares have burned in the European Union so far, making this season expected to be among the worst on record. /tema
