The fate of liberal democracy and the vital need to understand

By Gordon Brown

A global earthquake of youth is taking place, and they know full well that we have not kept our promises. We are not yet in a situation like that of 1968, when students at the Sorbonne lit the fuse that ignited a crisis that ultimately brought down the government of De Gaulle. But in late 2026, starting with the symbolic act of young French people climbing the Column at the Place de la Bastille in Paris, the world is experiencing the largest explosion of student demonstrations in 60 years.

When Italian students then occupied a high school in Rome, they opened their demand for change with the words “like in France.” Youth demonstrations are now erupting from India — where the government has responded with repressive force to their movement — to Albania, where, after taking to the streets for nearly five months, students are demanding not only an end to corruption but also a replacement for the government.

But the most significant set of protests has been in Serbia, where the Student List of candidates for national parliamentary elections has managed not only to topple a long-established government tainted by corruption allegedly linked to organized crime, but also to secure an electoral mandate. It is now poised to form a new administration. Nothing like this has ever happened before.

The Student List is not only changing Serbia's political leadership, but is also popularizing new methods of organization; it is building a system for selecting candidates from outside its ranks, using methods such as open public assemblies with alternating delegates and specialized working groups.

Eighty-five student assemblies selected candidates, an analysis of their internal rules explains. And the results are often surprising: the rector of Belgrade University, Vladan Djokić, was not selected as a candidate, despite being a long-time supporter of the movement and widely expected to play a major role in government.

The Student List has been compared by Croatian philosopher Srećko Horvat, who places the movement within a longer tradition of direct democracy and collective self-organization, to the Paris Commune of 1871. Its fundraising activities, however, are very current: it reportedly raised almost 2 million euros from more than 26,000 individual donors during the election campaign.

The wave of youth protests follows mobilizations in Kenya in 2024 and in Nepal, Indonesia, the Philippines, Madagascar, Morocco and Peru in 2025.

Protestat vetëm do të intensifikohen këtë muaj.

This is a global problem. Because of the ever-increasing debt burden and staggering spending on defense and energy subsidies, governments are trapped in a fiscal straitjacket so tight that they will struggle to find the resources to meet the aspirations of young people.

A large share of public spending is being absorbed by older generations, while schools and universities are being lost. Across the Organisation for European Development and Cooperation, around half of health and social security spending goes to older people, over 65, despite them making up only 18.5% of the total population. Pensions are the largest item in this account, accounting for 38% of all social spending, and a significantly higher share of all health spending goes to older people. Young people today have less income and more spending than previous generations, causing the income and wealth gap between young and old to widen even further.

It's time to connect the dots. Valérie Becquet, a sociologist at CY Cergy Paris University and co-author of the book The Geopolitics of Youth: Engagement and (e)Mobilization, warns that the protests are morphing into a broader social movement. "There are inequalities at all levels," she says, "with the gap widening between different social groups."

The causes of the demonstrations vary from country to country, but the underlying grievance is strikingly similar. Young people believe that any promise that they would do better than their parents' generation has already been broken, and this argument is strong. Liberal democracy itself is now on trial.
