Two Democratic Minnesota state lawmakers have been targeted in an armed attack at their respective homes in the US.
As a result of the shooting, Democratic House Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, lost their lives.
The news was confirmed by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz himself during an extraordinary press conference held on Saturday morning.
"This clearly looks like a deliberate political assassination. A violent act aimed at destabilization through terror," he declared in a harsh and emotionally charged tone.
According to authorities, another target of the attacks was state senator John Hoffman, also part of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party.
He and his wife, Yvette, were shot multiple times in their Champlin home. Both were rushed to the hospital and underwent surgery.
Governor Walz said he hopes they survive, adding that they are currently out of danger.
The shootings took place in the Champlin and Brooklyn Park areas, two nearby cities in the Minneapolis suburbs. Local police and emergency services have imposed tight security measures in the area and a 3-mile (5-kilometer) cordon has been set up around the scene.
Officials have issued a stay-at-home order for residents and urged them not to open their doors to anyone unless two police officers show up together. It is suspected that the perpetrator may be impersonating a police officer and is still at large.
