562 votes in favor, 9 against and 57 abstentions/ European Parliament adopts

The European Parliament adopted by a majority vote yesterday (22 January 2026) a resolution condemning the violence perpetrated by the Iranian authorities against protesters and the human rights violations in Iran. The resolution was adopted by 562 votes in favour, 9 against and 57 abstentions and addresses issues related to human rights, security and relations between the European Union and Iran.

In the document, MEPs condemn the use of force by Iranian security forces against peaceful protesters and demand an immediate end to the violence, as well as the release of those detained for participating in the protests, including activists and journalists.

The European Parliament also expresses support for the expansion of restrictive measures against the Iranian authorities and calls on the EU Council to consider declaring the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including its structures, as a terrorist organization.

The resolution calls for the strengthening of existing sanctions, including asset freezes and travel bans for individuals responsible for human rights violations, as well as their strict implementation by member states.

MEPs also condemn the internet shutdowns and censorship of information during the protests, calling for support for freedom of communication and access to information. They also demand the Iranian authorities' full cooperation with international investigative mechanisms mandated by the UN.

The resolution emphasizes that any improvement in relations between the EU and Iran must be conditional on concrete progress in the field of human rights, the release of political prisoners and respect for the principles of the rule of law.

Meanwhile, the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, has announced that Iranian diplomatic representatives have been banned from entering the premises of the European Parliament, as part of measures taken following recent developments in Iran.
