Iran is laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz, Trump reacts harshly: It will cost

Iran appears to be taking a bold step to destabilize not only the economies of enemy countries, but also allies such as China and Russia. The situation in the Strait of Hormuz appears to be escalating dangerously. US intelligence agencies have detected movements that indicate a possible deployment of naval mines by Iran. Iranian officials warn that US warships and ships of US allies will be “moving targets” if they try to pass through the important sea channel.

According to two people who have seen relevant reports from US intelligence agencies, and cited by US news networks such as CNN and CBS News, Iran has already begun laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz, the world's most important energy route, through which about a fifth of the world's crude oil trade passes. At the moment, the minelaying does not appear to be large-scale, but several dozen mines have been laid in recent days.

However, Iran retains significant capabilities to escalate the operation. According to one source, Iranian forces still have about 80% to 90% of their small fast boats and mine-laying equipment in the area. This means that if they choose to do so, they could lay hundreds of mines in this sea channel.

The Revolutionary Guard, which effectively controls the Strait of Hormuz along with the traditional Iranian navy, has the ability to deploy a wide range of mines in the area. According to the same reports, the mines Iran has are of Iranian, Chinese and Russian manufacture. The exact number of these mines remains unknown, but estimates cited by CBS put the number between 2,000 and 6,000.

The Revolutionary Guard had previously warned that any ship attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz would be targeted. Since the conflict began, the sea channel has been considered crucial for shipping. Sources who spoke to CNN described the situation as extremely dangerous, characterizing the area as a “valley of death” for ships attempting to pass through it.

In a recent tweet, following the US reports, US President Donald Trump said that there are no confirmed reports that Iran has laid mines. “If Iran has laid mines in the Strait of Hormuz (we have no reports that they have) we want them removed immediately,” he wrote on Truth Social.
The US president also warned that otherwise there would be serious consequences.

"If for some reason mines are laid and they are not removed immediately, the military consequences for Iran will be at a level never seen before," he noted, adding that if the mines that may have been laid are removed, "that would be a big step in the right direction."

Earlier today, the Revolutionary Guards' naval commander warned that any US or allied military ship passing through the Strait of Hormuz would be targeted.

This followed a statement by US Energy Secretary Chris Wright, who said the US Navy had escorted an oil tanker through the Strait. The corresponding post was published on the X platform, but was deleted shortly afterwards.

The head of the Revolutionary Guards' navy, Alireza Tangsiri, dismissed the claim. "The claim that an oil tanker passed through the Strait of Hormuz with a US military escort is completely false. Any passage of the US fleet and its allies will be stopped by Iranian missiles and drones," he noted.

For his part, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi commented via X that "American officials are spreading fake news to manipulate the markets. This will not protect them from the inflationary tsunami they have imposed on the Americans."

"Markets are facing the largest shortage in history - bigger than the Arab oil embargo, the Islamic revolution in Iran and the invasion of Kuwait combined," he concluded.
