"Oil in Albania, the highest in the region"/ Truckers warn of

The crisis caused by the increase in oil prices as a result of the conflict in the Middle East has also affected transport via Albanian trucks.

International freight transport operators are raising the alarm about the worsening situation in the sector as a result of increased costs, as they announce protests both in the blocking of movement at the Port of Durres and at border points.

Oil in Albania remains at the level of 209 lek, while in other countries in the region it is cheaper. But this does not favor Albanian truckers to get supplies in other countries as they cannot benefit from VAT refunds and not with high amounts of fuel in the tank, otherwise they have to pay taxes.

"The increase in oil prices has directly increased our costs. We travel long distances and have to be supplied with fuel in Albania, where the price is many times higher than in the region. In addition to costs, competitiveness also comes into play, as trucks from other countries operate normally,"  declared the International Transport Operator.

According to truck drivers, such a situation could even lead to bankruptcy. Transport operators are demanding subsidies for the increased costs or a review of bilateral contracts.

To impose restrictions on this sector with neighboring countries as the agreements in force allow trucks to operate without the need for permits, as well as for the Albanian side.

A worsening of the situation, according to truckers, could bring negative consequences not only for the sector but also for the economy and supply chain in the country.

Oil in Albania is traded for 2.09 euros, North Macedonia 1.5 euros (98 denars), Kosovo 1.8 euros and Serbia 1.7 euros. (chart)

Even with current oil prices in the region, which are lower than in Albania, truckers from other countries have announced protests at border crossings.
