Trump administration considering full energy embargo on Cuba to topple regime

The Donald Trump administration is considering imposing a complete embargo on oil imports to Cuba as part of possible strategies to change the regime in the Caribbean country, Politico reports, citing three sources familiar with the government's plans.
Although a decision has not yet been made on the approval of the measure, some critics of the Cuban government within the Trump administration support this step, while according to Politico, support is also given by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Blocking oil shipments to Cuba would mark a further escalation after Trump's decision to block oil from Venezuela. However, there is debate within the US government about how necessary this step is, as the lack of oil from Venezuela has significantly burdened the Cuban economy, and a total embargo could cause a humanitarian crisis.
“The discussions show how far Trump administration officials are willing to go toward Latin American governments they consider adversaries,” Politico points out.
One source with knowledge of the plans says, “Energy is the weapon that will bring down the regime.” The Trump administration considers the overthrow of the Cuban communist government, which has been in power since the 1959 revolution, an event that “will 100% happen in 2026.”
According to sources, this step could be legally supported by the 1994 US LIBERTAD Act, known as the Helms-Burton Act, which legitimizes the embargo on trade and financial transactions with Cuba.
Cuba imports about 60% of its oil needs, according to the International Energy Agency. Until recently, the country relied mainly on Venezuela, but the Trump administration has begun blocking some oil shipments. Today, the role of the main supplier belongs to Mexico, although the amount imported is not enough to fully cover Cuba's growing energy deficit.
