Swiss Ambassador to Albania speaks about protests: Citizen participation, the essence of every democratic system

The Swiss Ambassador to Albania, Ruth Huber , has commented from Korça on the protests that have been taking place in the country for 23 days, emphasizing that any such development is closely related to the functioning of democracy and civic participation.
Asked about the future of the protest and a possible message to the Albanian government, Huber said that as a representative of a foreign country she is cautious in political comments, but emphasized the importance of democratic institutions.
" This is a very political question and it is difficult to answer as a foreign embassy. Of course, through our development program we strengthen democracy, with support to the national parliament and local parliaments. We have a long-term support for civil society," said Huber.
She added that citizen participation in public life is an essential element of any democratic system, comparing this principle with the Swiss experience.
"The democratic system is based on democratic instruments and people's participation, just like in Switzerland," the ambassador stressed.
Her statement comes at a time when ongoing protests are taking place in Albania, which have received widespread public and political attention.
