EU to transfer rejected asylum seekers outside bloc

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and five European counterparts agreed on Friday to tighten asylum rules in the bloc, including allowing deportations to Afghanistan and Syria. The meeting follows Berlin's decision in May to turn away asylum seekers at the border.

Minister Dobrindt met with counterparts from France, Poland, Austria, the Czech Republic and Denmark, as well as with the EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, Magnus Brunner.

The agreed asylum policy objectives, which require approval from Brussels, include removing legislative obstacles to the transfer of rejected asylum seekers to safe centers outside the EU and facilitating asylum procedures in third countries, a scheme similar to the Italy-Albania protocol.

Germany’s new government has already imposed restrictions on migration, including the suspension of family reunification programs. On Friday, Germany deported 81 men to Afghanistan. “These are criminals, dangerous criminals,” the German interior minister said.
Deportations to countries like Afghanistan and Syria should be restored as standard practice.

Trade and development aid will also be used as leverage to increase returns and strengthen cooperation on migration, a document released after the meeting said. It called for the use of drones and more EU funding for border infrastructure and personnel.

The countries agreed to fight smugglers and work to dismantle human trafficking networks.

Asylum seekers who have already been granted protection in another EU country will be quickly rejected if they seek asylum elsewhere in the bloc.
