Donald Trump loyalist! Kash Patel confirmed as FBI director by US Senate

The US Senate has confirmed Kash Patel as the next director of the FBI, placing a staunch loyalist of President Donald Trump at the helm of the nation's top law enforcement agency.

His candidacy faced criticism from Democrats on Capitol Hill, who have warned that Patel is ready to use his position to seek investigations into Trump's political enemies.

At the hearing where his nomination was voted on, Patel did not deny these allegations, but asserted that he believed the FBI was accountable to the Justice Department and ultimately, the White House.

Patel's answers indicate that his arrival at FBI headquarters will usher in a new chapter, where the president directs each agency and they are poised to prioritize the administration's policy agenda.

FBI directors are given 10-year terms as a way to insulate them from political influence and keep them from being beholden to a particular president or administration.

Patel was selected in November to replace Christopher Wray, who was picked by Trump in 2017 and served for more than seven years. He resigned before Trump took office earlier this year.
