Brussels/ European Commission fines Greece 400 million euros for agricultural

The European Commission imposed a hefty fine of almost 400 million euros on Greece for failing to manage European Union funds for agriculture and for insufficient control, the Politiko portal reports today.

Brussels has ordered Athens to pay 392.2 million euros in EU funds due to systemic failures in the management of EU subsidies for agriculture in the period from 2016 to 2023.

The Greek agency responsible for overseeing EU subsidies has also been accused of making payments without sufficient on-the-spot checks or inspections.

The decision on the fine followed a major scandal surrounding fraud related to Greek farms, which is the subject of an investigation by the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO), Politiko recalls.

The EPPO is investigating dozens of cases where Greek citizens received EU agricultural funds intended to develop pastures they did not own or rent, or for agricultural activities in which they were never engaged, thus depriving genuine farmers of the money they deserved.

The Greek government announced last month that it would close the state agency for overseeing agricultural subsidies, OPEKEPE, which is under investigation.
