Bulgaria elects first female president

Bulgaria has elected a female president for the first time in its history. Vice President Iliana Yotova has officially taken office as President of the Republic, after accepting the resignation of President Rumen Radev.
The decision was made by Bulgaria's Constitutional Court, which approved Radev's resignation, paving the way for the automatic transfer of presidential powers to Yotova, in accordance with the country's Constitution.
According to reports, Iliana Yotova immediately assumes the functions of president, without having to take a new oath before the National Assembly, as she had already taken the oath in 2021, when she was elected Vice President. During her term, a new Vice President will not be appointed.
Yotova began her public career as a journalist, before joining the Bulgarian Socialist Party. She was a member of the Bulgarian Parliament and later a Member of the European Parliament, building a strong political profile at the national and European levels.
For nine years, Iliana Yotova has served as Vice President of Bulgaria, which has guaranteed institutional continuity in assuming the new position.
On Friday afternoon, Rumen Radev left the presidential palace in an official ceremony, accompanied by his successor. He had announced his resignation on January 19, becoming the first president in Bulgaria's modern democratic history to leave office before the end of his term.
