Local elections date set in North Macedonia
The Speaker of the Assembly, Afrim Gashi, officially signed the decision to announce local elections which will be held on October 19 of this year.
The decision has been sent to the competent bodies for the organization and implementation of the elections, while the Assembly will continue its regular administrative functioning during this period, but no plenary sessions will be held, in order to avoid the misuse of the parliament's rostrum for electoral purposes.
Gashi, in his letter after the announcement of the elections, appealed to political forces, candidates and relevant structures to show a high level of political culture.
In the local elections, citizens, through two electoral districts in 80 local self-government units and the City of Skopje, will elect the mayors and councils that will lead the municipalities for the next four years.
After the announcement of the elections, the State Electoral Commission must hold a session in which the calendar of all electoral deadlines and actions will be published, as well as the obligations of election participants, the media, and electoral bodies.
The Electoral Roll check begins 15 days after the announcement of the elections and lasts a total of 20 days.
During that time, citizens can verify their data and, if there are irregularities, request that it be changed.
The deadline for submitting candidate lists expires 35 days before election day, namely on September 15. The SEC must verify and confirm the lists no later than September 27.
The election campaign begins on September 30 and will last 20 days. The state has allocated about 10 million euros for the implementation of the entire election process.
Two-thirds of this money is for political advertising of candidates in the media, while another part is for compensation for members of electoral councils, as well as transportation and logistics related to voting material.
Meanwhile, by the end of the month, 21,000 administrators must be elected to serve on electoral councils in around 3,500 polling stations.
In addition to them, the parties that won the most votes in the past elections, VMRO-DPMNE, SDSM, DUI and VLEN, must also propose 14,000 members of the electoral councils./ Kosovapress.
