Sentencing of Marine Le Pen, leader of far-right party, calls for protests: French democracy is being executed

Jordan Bardella, president of the National Rally party, is calling for a peaceful mobilization of French citizens, following the verdict for Le Pen, who was found guilty and sentenced for embezzlement of EU funds.
In a statement, he describes the sentence as a "democratic scandal" and says that "French democracy is being executed."
"By banning Marine Le Pen from running in the 2027 presidential election, they are trying to prevent her admission to the Elysée Palace by any means necessary," he says.
"Through our popular and peaceful mobilization, let's show them that the will of the people is stronger," he says, calling on citizens to protest this decision and support Le Pen.
"Let's show those who want to bypass democracy that the will of the people is stronger!" he wrote further.
The French politician was found guilty by the court of embezzling EU funds to finance her far-right party, the "National Rally".
The court also banned her from holding public office for five years, meaning she will not be able to run in France's presidential election in 2027.
The verdict against Marine Le Pen provides for a four-year prison sentence, two of which are suspended, while the other two will be monitored with an electronic bracelet and not in a cell. The court also imposed a fine of 100,000 euros on Le Pen.
