Magnificent exhibition in homage to the famous French photographer, Doisneau

Paris is paying homage to one of the most emblematic French photographers, Robert Doisneau (1912-1994), with a grand exhibition planned at the Musée Maillol.

Titled "Robert Doisneau. Instants Donnés", the retrospective of around 400 photographs in a three-story space – the most important of the last 20 years – allows us to discover how the work of Doisneau – who became famous all over the world with "The Kiss at the Hotel de Ville" – is in reality much more complex, richer and more articulated than that single photo that has become an icon.

Throughout his long career, Doisneau not only portrayed lovers in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower – but spent almost every day immortalizing the diverse humanity of the French capital and its boundless suburbs.

From children portrayed on the streets in the immediate post-war period, to typical French restaurants, vagrants, prostitutes – or portraits of his artist friends, including Jacques Prévert, Pablo Picasso and Alberto Moravia.

Also on display will be lesser-known advertising works – and those from the time he collaborated with the fashion magazine "Vogue".

"A humanist photographer, rooted in the reality of Paris and its suburbs," said the organizers.

The exhibition will remain open until October 12.
