Erdogan: Full EU membership remains a strategic priority for Turkey, despite Brussels' obstacles

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that despite the difficulties and obstacles that continue in negotiations with Brussels, full membership in the European Union remains Turkey's strategic objective.

"We discussed current foreign policy issues, including recent developments in relations with the European Union. Full EU membership is still a strategic priority for us, despite the obstacles that lie ahead," Erdogan said after a cabinet meeting in Ankara.

Erdogan expressed concern over the continued escalation of the security situation in the Black Sea as a result of the Russia-Ukraine war, highlighting the recent attack on a tanker ship within Turkey's exclusive economic zone.

He stressed that Turkey will continue to work to end the fighting in the Black Sea and strengthen regional stability.

"Attacks on merchant ships in our exclusive economic zone constitute a worrying escalation. These acts cannot be justified under any circumstances, as they endanger human lives and the environment. We are issuing the necessary warnings to all parties," the Turkish president declared.

Referring to the internal process for resolving the Kurdish issue, Erdogan said:
"I hope and believe that a Turkey without terrorism and the brotherhood we aim to build in our region will lead to the extinction of all dark plans and the destruction of old games, paving the way for a new era."

He added that the government will continue to work calmly and decisively:
"Without falling prey to provocations and without giving in to the language of anger, we will act with sincerity. No one should have any doubts: 86 million citizens will unite and, God willing, will turn the 21st century into the 'Century of Turkey,'" Erdogan concluded.
