Only accepting Berisha's truths will save the DP from final extinction!

While Edi Rama's government has fallen into the trap of self-created corruption, a situation of degradation and despair is also openly appearing in the largest opposition party, the Democratic Party. The more the socialist majority is criminally, politically and morally ruined, the more powerless, shrunken and hypocritical the Democratic Party, or more precisely its leadership, seems.

At first glance it looks like a trap where the two big traditional parties have fallen, but in fact the leaders of both have trapped Albania, the citizens, the honest democrats and socialists. The case of Belinda Balluku's capture by SPAK and her defense by Edi Rama by attacking SPAK and GJKKO, clearly show that Rilindja and its leader are entering a final clash not only with justice but also with the internationals. These are decisive moments for Albania. The fall of the corrupt organization "Rilindja" requires an alternative. What a clean and untainted opposition should have as its mission.

But while these days in Bulgaria the opposition and the citizens brought the government to its knees just for a budget, the leadership of the DP here in Albania no longer inspires the party either. Not only is it no longer followed by the citizens, but it is also being rapidly abandoned by the most loyal militants. This December the DP celebrates its 35th anniversary, but if it continues like this under the leadership of Sali Berisha, this party seriously risks remaining a memory of the transition, both beautiful and tragic. Sali Berisha, who started this path 4 years ago for his personal troubles with the US and justice, seems to openly say that if he does not "solve" his and his family's issues, he is determined to take the DP with him along with his fate.

But is there any hope left, can the DP be saved from final extinction on the Albanian political scene?

Most honest democrats now agree that saving the DP from the risk of extinction requires drastic intervention and a fundamental change in strategy and leadership.

But this rescue operation can only begin when this party will correct its relationship with its truths. The full truth hurts, even shames, but it is the only path to liberation and salvation.

The truth is that the DP is not "non grata", while its leader Sali Berisha is, for 4 years now and it seems that it will remain so forever. The party and the Democrats are neither under investigation by SPAK nor on trial by the GJKKO for corruption, their leader is.

Sali Berisha returned to the leadership of the DP, promising to open the party, elect deputies from the membership, i.e. primaries, topple the "Rama Regime" in 6 months, that the president who loses the elections, (Neni Basha), will leave and will not run again, that the vote would be protected, the party would become bigger, etc., etc. The truth is that the opposite happened; from the 2021 elections when the DP was led by Basha to those of 2025 under the leadership of Berisha, over 300 thousand votes have disappeared. Therefore, the party is also being rapidly abandoned by the membership, because the "gray" voter is no longer even close.

Once all these truths are said and accepted, then Sali Berisha, along with several other figures who have become a burden on the party's Euro-Atlantic image, must leave the Democrats themselves.

Only such a radical move, a return as an uncompromising anti-corruption, pro-justice force, Western-oriented and free from its contested past, would signal a true renewal of the DP.

This would not only save the DP from extinction but would also quickly turn it from the "lesser evil", into a dazzling contrast and an alternative to governance. It would make the DP a beloved house of hope for all Albanians against the Rama majority, which is rapidly degrading after being caught red-handed by SPAK and international partners as a corrupt organization.

If the DP wants to survive (and it is in the final stages), it urgently needs to make an honest reckoning with itself and it needs to decide quickly: Is it more important to keep the opposition "power" of Sali Berisha and the old figures, or the survival of the party as a democratic and pro-European force that can come to power very quickly, to save the country from the corrupt organization "Rilindja"?

Democrats must respond to this great truth today, because tomorrow will be too late!
