Extreme winter in Moscow, records heaviest snowfall in more than 200 years

Russia's capital, Moscow, recorded its heaviest snowfall in more than two centuries in January, according to meteorologists at Moscow State University.

According to official data, about 92 millimeters of snowfall have been measured as of January 29, the highest figure recorded in the last 203 years. In some areas of the city, the thickness of the snow has reached up to 60 centimeters.

The situation has caused major traffic disruptions. Trains in the Moscow region have been delayed, while many vehicles have been stuck in traffic due to large piles of snow. Footage from the city shows residents trying to navigate through streets completely covered in snow.

"January was an extremely cold month with unusual snowfall in Moscow," Moscow State University announced on social media.

According to experts, the severe storms were caused by deep atmospheric cyclones that have engulfed the Moscow region with powerful air fronts.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, the Kamchatka region in eastern Russia declared a state of emergency after a powerful snowstorm partially paralyzed the region's main city. Footage posted online showed buildings covered up to the second floor and vehicles completely submerged in snow.
