Explosion and fire at Turkey's largest oil refinery

An explosion at Turkey's largest oil refinery caused a huge fire on Thursday evening in Izmit, forcing authorities to evacuate workers as emergency crews battled to bring the flames under control.
The explosion occurred in a gasoline warehouse at the TUPRAS Izmit refinery in Kocaeli province in the early evening hours. The flames spread rapidly, causing panic in the large industrial complex.
As of late Thursday, fire services were continuing efforts to extinguish the fire, while all refinery employees were evacuated as a precaution.
The Izmit Refinery is one of four facilities operated by the state-owned company that dominates Turkey's oil refining sector. The refinery has a processing capacity of 11 million tons of crude oil per year, making it the company's largest, alongside the Izmir refinery.
