Chinese football scandal: 13 clubs punished for match-fixing

Thirteen football clubs in China have been punished following a wide-ranging investigation into match-fixing, betting and corruption in the football industry.

Nine teams will start the upcoming Chinese Super League season with negative points. The heaviest sanctions were imposed on Shanghai Shenhua, last season's runners-up, and Tianjin Tigers, who were each deducted 10 points. Four of the punished teams have already been relegated to the Chinese Super League.

The 13 teams have also been fined amounts ranging from 21,000 to 104,000 pounds (200,000 to one million yuan). The penalties were handed out by authorities as a result of an investigation into match-fixing and football-related betting.

A statement stressed that the aim of these measures was "to maintain industry discipline, clean up the football environment and maintain fair competition."

The Chinese Football Association (CFA) added that point deductions and financial penalties are based on the scale, nature, seriousness and social impact of irregular transactions, emphasizing its "zero tolerance" policy towards corruption.

In September 2024, 43 officials and players were banned from football for life. Former Everton midfielder Li Tie, along with 73 others, are also banned for life.

The 48-year-old was jailed last year after admitting to fixing matches, accepting bribes and offering bribes to secure a top coaching position.
