A Chinese court has sentenced 11 members of a notorious mafia family that ran fraud centers in Myanmar to death.

The BBC reports that the Ming family, 39 of whose members were found guilty of criminal activity, were sentenced to long prison terms. Those who were not sentenced to death received long prison sentences.

The Ming family was one of Myanmar's four most notorious mafias, operating from the quiet provincial town of Laukai, near the Chinese border.

In the city, they ran several drug trafficking, prostitution, illegal gambling and online fraud operations, targeting victims from all over the world.

Myanmar finally took tough measures, arresting several members of these criminal organizations in 2023 and handing them over to Chinese authorities.

The court found that since 2015, the Ming family and other criminal groups had been involved in criminal activities, including telecommunications fraud, illegal casinos, drug trafficking and prostitution.

According to the court, their gambling and fraud activities had brought in more than 10 billion yuan (11.9 billion euros).

The court also found that the Ming family and other criminal groups were responsible for the deaths of several workers at the fraud centers, including killing workers in an incident to prevent them from returning to China.

Ming Xueshang, the patriarch of the family, reportedly committed suicide, while other family members surrendered to Chinese authorities.

What are fraud centers?

The scam centers were originally created to "exploit" the demand for gambling, which is illegal in China and many other neighboring countries.

However, the casinos in Laukaeng have evolved into a lucrative venue for money laundering, drug trafficking and the trafficking of white laborers.

In addition, the fraud centers have led to more than 100,000 foreigners, many of them Chinese, living like prisoners, working long hours and committing numerous online scams, targeting victims around the world.
