Map/ From Bahrain to Qatar: Where are the US military bases in the Middle East?

Iran launched an operation against a US base in Qatar today. The development represents a direct extension of the conflict beyond Israel's borders and signals that Iran is ready to strike the US presence in the region as part of retaliation for US air strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities on June 13.

The move poses a serious challenge to the US and its allies in the Persian Gulf. The attack on Qatar, which hosts one of the most important US bases in the region, comes at a time when Washington has warned of the risk of a wider conflict and has put its troops on high alert.

While Iran presents these attacks as "national defense," the direct involvement of US military facilities and the use of more sophisticated weapons will force a high-caliber response from the US and regional allies.

Where are the US military bases in the Middle East?

The United States has thousands of soldiers deployed to various military bases in the Middle East, a region where Washington has conducted numerous operations over the past few decades.

Below are the main Middle Eastern countries where the US has a strong military presence, led by the US Central Command for the Middle East.

This small kingdom in the Persian Gulf is home to a naval base that is home to the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet and the headquarters of the regional naval command. Bahrain’s deep-sea port can accommodate the largest U.S. military ships, including aircraft carriers. The U.S. has used the base since 1948, previously under the administration of the British Royal Navy. Several U.S. mine countermeasures and logistics ships are based in Bahrain, including Coast Guard units with fast boats.

The US has troops stationed in several regions of Iraq, including air bases in Al-Asad (west) and Erbil (north). Although the Iraqi government is a close ally of Iran, it remains a strategic partner of the US. About 2,500 US soldiers are present in Iraq as part of the international coalition against the Islamic State jihadist group. Baghdad and Washington have agreed to a gradual withdrawal of coalition forces. US forces in Iraq and Syria have been attacked several times by pro-Iranian militants, most notably after the outbreak of war in Gaza in October 2023, but the US response has been with strong strikes against targets linked to Tehran.

Kuwait is home to several US bases, including Camp Arifjan, which is home to a CENTCOM command center. The US also has military equipment depots in the country. Ali al-Salem Air Base is home to the 386th Expeditionary Air Force, which serves as a major hub for airlift and deployment of combat forces in the region. Drones, including MQ-9 Reapers, are also stationed in Kuwait.

Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar is the largest US base in the Middle East and houses the CENTCOM command center, air forces and special forces in the region. It is home to fighter jets and the 379th Air Expeditionary Force, which includes transport, air refueling, intelligence, surveillance and medical evacuation assets.

The US maintains troops at several bases in Syria as part of the international effort against the Islamic State. In April, the Pentagon announced plans to reduce its military presence in Syria, although jihadist groups remain active in the still-fragile country.

Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates is home to the 380th US Expeditionary Air Force, consisting of ten squadrons of aircraft, including drones. Al Dhafra also operates fighter jets and an air defense and missile defense training center.
