China executes man who poisoned billionaire to death after conflict over "The Three-Body Problem" producer's murder

Authorities in China have executed a former company executive convicted of the murder of billionaire businessman Lin Qi, a figure also known as the executive producer of the Netflix series “The Three-Body Problem.” According to local media, the executed Xu Yao was found guilty of poisoning Lin Qi in 2020, following an internal conflict at the company Yoozoo Games, which owns the rights to adapt the popular science fiction trilogy “The Three-Body Problem.”
Investigations revealed that Xu Yao had purchased toxic substances online and used poisonous mushrooms containing highly dangerous ingredients, which he then put into drinks and capsules, offering to the victim and several other company employees. Lin Qi became seriously ill in December 2020 and died on December 25 at the age of 39, while several other people, including another producer and his wife, survived the poisoning.
Xu Yao was sentenced to death in 2024, and his execution took place on May 21, according to Chinese media reports. Yoozoo Games confirmed the case, saying that justice had been “served.” The incident comes at a time when the company was involved in a major international deal to adapt the novel by author Liu Cixin, whose work “The Three-Body Problem” has become a global phenomenon and has won prestigious awards such as the Hugo Award.
