Putin's envoy Dmitriev: 'Positive dynamics' in US-Russia relations

Russian President Vladimir Putin's envoy for investment, Kirill Dmitriev, said on Thursday that he saw a "positive dynamic" in relations between Moscow and Washington, although more meetings were needed to resolve differences.
Dmitriev, speaking to Russian and American media after talks with officials from President Donald Trump's administration, also said he saw prospects for the beginning of a solution to the more than three-year war in Ukraine.
He said his talks in Washington had touched on issues as wide-ranging as rare earths production, Arctic cooperation and even manned flights to Mars. He said work was underway to restore direct air links.
“Undoubtedly, we notice a positive dynamic in our relations,” Russian news agencies quoted him as telling reporters in Washington. “It will still take a series of meetings for us to resolve all our differences. But the main thing is a positive and creative attitude.”
"We see absolutely clearly that the president's administration is intent on resolving issues, unlike President (Joe) Biden. They behave very respectfully, ask a lot of questions, find compromises," he said.
“I think with the Trump administration, we are now in the realm of thinking about what is possible, what can really work and how we can find a long-term solution,” Dmitriev said. “I think a long-term solution is what is needed, because we are also thinking about global security, how to make sure that Russian security concerns are taken into account.”
“I regret the return of protectionism in the United States, something we haven’t seen for almost a century,” Dmitriev said. “American companies are interested in Russia and wanted to fill the places that European companies have left. We see that the ideological constraints that exist among European companies can allow American companies to fill a number of places.
The talks extended to the Arctic, rare metals and other sectors “where we can build creative and positive relationships.” He told Newsmax that “Russia would officially like to work with Elon Musk on a mission to Mars, because we believe that Russia has some nuclear technologies that could be useful.”
Earlier, in comments posted on the Telegram messaging app, Dmitriev had said that unidentified forces were trying to create tension between Russia and the United States.
“Today, numerous forces interested in maintaining tension stand in the way of restoring constructive cooperation… These forces are deliberately distorting Russia’s position, trying to disrupt every step towards dialogue, sparing neither money nor resources for this,” Dmitriev wrote.
“Opponents of rapprochement fear that Russia and the United States will find common ground, begin to understand each other better, and build cooperation in both international affairs and the economy,” he said.
Restoring dialogue was "a difficult and gradual process. But every meeting, every honest conversation allows us to move forward."
