Italy takes a decision: cell phones are banned during classes

The new Minister of Education in Italy, Giuseppe Valditara, has declared that the use of mobile phones will be banned in Italian schools. The decision will be for the entire basic education system, including a part of the secondary school.
Valditara told 'Il Foglio' that the decision was made both for educational reasons and because the use of smartphones and tablets can often create tension between students and teachers, sometimes leading to acts of aggression against school staff.
"To protect the pedagogical staff means to protect the principle of delegation and authority which is the board not only of the school system, but also of the democratic system", said the minister, who after taking office in 2022 issued a circular, where he repeated the ban in smartphone schools in kindergartens and primary schools.
Last year, the UN's educational, cultural and scientific agency UNESCO recommended that smartphones be banned from schools around the world, on the grounds that they distract students and have a negative impact on learning outcomes.
