The ambassadors of Iran and Israel to the UN clashed during a United Nations Security Council meeting on Friday, accusing each other of violating international laws and vowing to continue their campaigns.

As the conflict between Israel and Iran enters its second week, the council held an emergency meeting to discuss the situation.

Iran's UN Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani declared that Iran would continue to "nourish its right to self-defense" for as long as necessary, accusing Israel and its allies of violating international law with attacks on Iran and calling on the council to act.

Israel's UN Ambassador Danny Danon, who took the floor immediately after Iravan, accused the Iranian ambassador of "playing the victim."

"How dare you ask the international community to protect you from the consequences of your genocidal agenda? You are not a victim. You are not a diplomat. You are a wolf disguised as a diplomat, and we will no longer pretend otherwise," Danon said.

“Israel will not stop. Not until Iran’s nuclear threat is dismantled, not until its war machine is disarmed, not until our people and yours are safe,” he added, stressing that Israel’s attack was undertaken in “the last possible window to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.”

UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the conflict between the two countries could escalate quickly and called for restraint. "The escalation of this conflict could ignite a fire that no one can control. I appeal for an end to the fighting and a return to serious negotiations," he said.

While China said Israel was violating international law, Russia also said Israel had shown a "blatant disregard" for diplomacy.

On the other hand, the US called Iran the main source of terror in the Middle East and said that it continues to stand by Israel as an ally and support its actions.
