“Khamenei names three successors in case he is killed”/ The New York

Sources in Tehran tell the New York Times that, fearing he could be assassinated, hiding in a bunker, "Ali Khamenei has chosen a series of replacements in his military chain of command in case the current leaders are killed."

But not only that: Ayatollah Khamenei has also named three senior clerical figures as candidates to succeed him in the event he is assassinated.

Israel's targeted attacks, which in just eight days have eliminated more than 25 of the political and military leaders on whom the Islamic Republic relies, have led him to fear for his own life. "The absolute priority is to preserve the state," Vali Nasr, an expert on Iran affairs and professor of international relations at Johns Hopkins University, told the New York Times.

“Everything is calculated and pragmatic.” Sources indicate that his son, Mojtaba, the second in age and considered a possible successor, is not among the names selected.

Khamenei is making decisions to ensure religious dictatorship. In peacetime, the supreme leader – the highest religious and political authority in the country – is elected by the Assembly of Experts, a body of 88 religious members directly elected by the people every eight years.

According to the Iranian Constitution, the supreme leader must meet several specific conditions: to be a theologian and Islamic jurist (faqih), to be just and pious, to have knowledge of the times in which he lives, to show courage, initiative, and leadership skills, and to enjoy recognition as a leader by the majority of the population.
