Water crisis forces Iran to buy water from neighboring countries

The Iranian government is planning to buy water from neighboring countries in response to the drought that has gripped the country across its territory.
"If a country is willing to sell water, we will buy it," Energy Minister Abbas Aliabadi said today, according to Fars news agency.
The plan also includes importing products that require a lot of water to produce.
Most of Iran's neighboring countries, including Iraq, Afghanistan, and the border areas of Pakistan, are also suffering from water shortages and drought.
Meanwhile, Armenia in the north has larger water reserves compared to the rest of the region.
Iran is one of the driest countries in the world.
In recent years, experts have noticed a significant decrease in rainfall, while droughts and extreme weather phenomena are on the rise.
For years, experts have warned that Iranian agriculture is being harmed by misguided subsidy policies.
Instead of adapting to water scarcity conditions, crops that consume a lot of water have been supported.
Traditional farming methods have been replaced with serious long-term consequences for land and water reserves.
