Who is Pavel Durov, the founder of "Telegram" and what are the reasons

Telegram founder Pavel Durov, 39, was arrested in France on Saturday evening. French media reported that he was arrested due to violations found in the popular messaging app.

After the announcement of his arrest, the Russian embassy in France also reacted and requested diplomatic access to Durov's arrest warrant. The embassy said France has so far "refused" Russia's permission to intervene in his arrest.

Pavel Durov, a 39-year-old Russian-born entrepreneur, is the billionaire founder and CEO of messaging app Telegram. Forbes estimated his fortune at $15.5 billion.

Durov's journey into the world of social media began with VKontakte, often called the "Russian Facebook," which he co-founded in 2006. VKontakte quickly became the largest social networking site in Russia, but it also pitted Durov against with the Russian government. In 2014, under pressure to shut down opposition communities on VKontakte, Durov refused to comply and left Russia. He sold his shares in VKontakte and began self-imposed exile.

In 2013, Durov launched Telegram, a messaging app that emphasizes user privacy with its encrypted messaging feature. Telegram has since become a formidable competitor to platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok and WeChat. Today, the app boasts hundreds of millions of users worldwide, and aims to surpass one billion monthly active users within the next year.

Telegram is particularly influential in Russia, Ukraine and other former Soviet states, where it serves as a crucial source of information, especially in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine. Russian and Ukrainian officials rely heavily on the platform, which some analysts have called "a virtual battlefield" for the conflict.

Telegram was created in Russia, in 2013, with the aim of giving its citizens – and the rest of the world – a platform where communications can be secure and above all private. Free from any political prying eyes. Telegram was the first app to use end-to-end encryption. Its data centers are spread around the world, while it chose Dubai for its headquarters.

Born as an alternative to WhatsApp, it is actually very different. More than a messaging app, Telegram is a social network, with many different features that suit different types of communication.

Akuzat dhe pasojat e mundshme për Telegram

Nëse është e vërtetë që në shumë pjesë të botës, nga Hong Kongu në Iran, krijimi i Durov ka qenë një ndihmë e vlefshme në luftën për të drejtat e dikujt, është po aq e vërtetë që mund të gjesh gjithçka në Telegram. Dhe me të vërtetë përdoret për trafikun e drogës, pornografinë e fëmijëve, piraterinë, shantazhin dhe përdhunimin, terrorizmin.

Pikërisht për këtë arsye, për refuzimin e tij të qartë për të aplikuar çdo lloj moderimi dhe për të dashur të mbetet një “platformë neutrale” pa asnjë “rol gjeopolitik”, ai konsiderohet si bashkëpunëtor në të gjitha krimet e kryera në Telegram nga hetuesit francezë.

Ne nuk e dimë, për momentin, nëse mund të ketë pasoja të mundshme në funksionimin e tij: nëse përfundimisht do të duhet të dorëzohemi dhe të vendosim kontrolle më të mëdha mbi përmbajtjen që përcjell ose nëse mund të përballet me bllokime të mundshme.

E sigurtë është se arrestimi i Durov përkthehet në nevojën që krijuesit e platformave dhe pajisjeve teknologjike të reflektojnë mbi përgjegjësitë e tyre.

Dhe mbi efektet e mundshme që ai aplikacion, ai telefon apo ai portal mund t’i sjellë shoqërisë në tërësi. Edhe nëse, për momentin, siguria e grupit dhe privatësia individuale janë ende dy koncepte që shpesh shkojnë në antitezë.

Elon Musk on X has opened the hashtag, Free Pavel. He says that at this rate, it won't be far off when people in Europe are jailed for liking a meme. He himself and his social networks are under strict surveillance by European authorities.
