Going to the car wash can be expensive.

As the German Car Foundation's 2019 report shows, around 40% of drivers wash their cars once a month and almost three-quarters of them at a car wash for an average of 11 euros per wash or 130 euros a year.

If you want to save time and money and wash your car yourself at home, you can face high fines in some exceptional cases. Washing your car yourself can be banned and depending on the province, you can pay a fine of up to 100,000 euros.

The reason for this is the so-called Law on Water Resources (Law on Water Resources), which prohibits the use of toxic substances or substances that pollute water that then goes into the groundwater (Article 48 of the Law on Water Resources). When washing a car on private property, the possibility of dirty water penetrating the ground must be excluded. For this reason, washing a car with chemical cleaning agents in your garden or yard is prohibited.

Since the legislation does not provide for uniform regulations, the implementation of the requirements of ËHG is left to the municipalities themselves. Therefore, while in some communities washing cars with clean water is allowed, in other communities it may be prohibited due to the possibility of water contamination from oil residues. Depending on the province, violating the Water Resources Act can lead to heavy fines. For example, the fine for polluting groundwater with large amounts of other water polluting liquids in Saxony is up to 100,000 euros. If you plan to wash your car, you should definitely check with the municipal office in advance, or take the car to the car wash.
