EU's list of countermeasures against the US is ready! New tariffs could be imposed on American exports

The European Union is preparing additional countermeasures to be applied to imports from the United States worth 72 billion euros, after US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of customs tariffs, the relevant European Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič said after a meeting of trade ministers in Brussels.
Preparations for the measures include a list of US industrial and agricultural products on which the EU could impose new tariffs if European efforts to reach an agreement fail. After public consultations, the list was revised once again.
Initially, it included imports from the US to the EU worth up to 95 billion euros. Sevcovic did not immediately say which products were left out. The list also contained higher-value products, such as American aircraft, cars and bourbon.
Trump's letter and a "completely different dynamic"
Sevcovic expressed disappointment with Trump's warning to introduce new import tariffs of 30 percent on EU products from August 1. "We have been negotiating a basic agreement for weeks and I think we are almost close to an agreement," he said. Trump's announcement now brings "a completely different dynamic."
At the same time, Sevcovic warned that implementing Trump's plans would have drastic consequences for transatlantic trade. "Let's be honest: 30 percent tariffs would be practically a trade embargo," he said, adding that the introduction of such tariffs would have significant negative consequences for both sides.
Negotiations until the end of the month
The Commissioner for Trade stressed that he will continue the dialogue with the United States of America in order to reach an agreement by August 1.
If no agreement is reached, the EU will react with serious countermeasures. Countermeasures have already been adopted in case the US does not withdraw the new tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, which were previously put into effect.
According to previous EU statements, new tariffs on US exports worth a total of 21 billion euros could be added to tariffs on goods and services worth 72 billion euros.
The European Commission has also recently prepared restrictions on the export of steel scrap and chemical products to the US worth 4.4 billion euros.
Threats of a trade war
Sevcovic, speaking about further negotiations, said that, despite Trump's letter, he has the impression that the American partners are also ready to continue the talks. He is convinced that the solution reached through negotiations is much better than the tensions that could arise in the event of an escalation after August 1. "Otherwise, this will not end well," he stressed.
The German economy, which is strongly export-oriented, is particularly vulnerable. The German Federal Bank has calculated that one in four jobs in Germany depends on exports. And exports have been declining recently./DW
