Will North Macedonia impose a tax on singles? Mickoski: More deaths than births

At a government event, Prime Minister Mickoski said that it is time for a country where more young people get married and have more children.
He emphasized that this is not just a problem of North Macedonia, but a challenge for all of Europe, and even beyond.
"Let's build institutions that don't waste the youth of others, but cultivate it. Let's build a state where hope is more important than a passport. And let's seriously think about additional taxes for unmarried men and women ," said Mickoski.
He announced that in 2024, 16,061 children were born in North Macedonia, while 20,201 people died. This, he emphasized, is a natural decrease of 4,140 people in just one year.
"In the last four years, we have lost more than 33,000 residents, as if a city the size of Kavadarci or Kichevo had disappeared. The birth rate has fallen from 12.5 percent in 2010 to just 8.8 percent in 2024 ," he said.
He added that in many municipalities and villages in the country there are no longer even first graders and more and more people live alone.
