The honeymoon between Donald Trump and Elon Musk appears to be over. In fact, the tariffs imposed by the US administration have forcefully exposed the cracks in the relationship between the US president and the Tesla boss.

Although tariffs are a central point of Trump's agenda, Musk has tried to use his privileged role as "close friend" to launch a personal and direct appeal to the tycoon to prevent the implementation of customs duties.

His effort, at least initially, fell on deaf ears, highlighting the first breakdown in the relationship.

A dispute that does not seem possible to be resolved even after the 90-day suspension of duties, given the additional customs tariffs imposed on China, a major trading partner for Musk's companies.

Since the tariffs took effect, Musk, despite the failure of his first attempt to stop Trump, has not missed an opportunity to publicly express his disagreement.

Starting from the statement when he underlined that he hopes "that the US and Europe will be able to create a very close partnership: there is already an alliance, but I hope it will be closer and stronger. And in terms of obligations, we will move to a situation with zero obligations in the future, towards a free trade area".

But his criticisms, of course, didn't stop there. In "true Musk style," the Tesla boss then pointed the finger at the person he considers the main architect of the White House's tariff policy: Peter Navarro, calling him "crazy" and "stupider than a sack of bricks," even going so far as to coin the sarcastic nickname "Peter Retarrdo."

Elon Musk's battle against tariffs was also supported by his brother Kimball, who is on Tesla's board.

In a post on the social network X, Kimball Musk, before announcing the 90-day suspension of tariffs, had clearly expressed his opposition to the customs tariffs, describing them as a "permanent tax on American consumers" and "the highest tax imposed by a president in America in many generations."

But if the tariffs were the spark, the first cracks in the Trump-Musk partnership were seen with the Wisconsin Supreme Court election.

The loss of the Republican candidate, strongly supported by the Tesla boss, had in fact "fueled" Trump's circle against Musk, who has never hidden that he did not appreciate the presence of the "X" platform billionaire.

When a relationship is in trouble, there are always two versions. For Trump, Musk probably wouldn't win any more votes, but instead, he would lose them.

For his part, the billionaire seems to be starting to think that the volcanic president, who promised a new golden age, is on the path to a recession in the American economy.
