Power outages, explosions and downed drones in Iraq

Iraq was suddenly plunged into a total power outage tonight, March 4, as tensions and incidents escalate across the country.

The Ministry of Energy announced that the national grid has been shut down in all provinces, without giving a clear explanation for the cause of the outage. Investigations to determine the reasons for the collapse are ongoing, while technical teams are trying to restore power supply to citizens.

Many parts of the country have faced repeated attacks since the beginning of the conflict between Israel, the United States and Iran.

Also today, the US embassy in Baghdad issued an urgent appeal for American citizens to leave Iraq immediately, advising them to take shelter and only leave when security has been restored. “American citizens in Iraq are encouraged to leave as soon as it is safe to do so and to remain sheltered until such time as it is safe to do so,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, new explosions were reported in Erbil, the capital of the autonomous Kurdistan region in the north of the country. The explosions were recorded mainly near the airport, where US-led coalition forces are stationed. Since the start of the war in the Middle East, several drones have been shot down over Erbil.

Another incident was recorded near Baghdad International Airport, where two drones were shot down, according to security sources, but no casualties or material damage were reported. The airport complex includes a military base that houses a US diplomatic facility and has previously housed troops from the Washington-led coalition.

Experts warn that an escalation of the conflict could have serious humanitarian and economic consequences for Iraq and neighboring countries, including a risk to energy supplies and regional stability. International organizations and governments are urged to take urgent measures to protect civilians and avoid a deeper crisis that could spread throughout the Middle East.
